Plan to install more Global Positioning System Instruments

The Indian Express, Dec. 3rd 2002

Twelve Dumper placers and 16 corporation conservancy lorries might soon have Global Positioning System (GPS) instruments in place.

It was time for introspection for the corporation health officials as they tested the GPS software's trip summary report of the Dumper Placer vehicle TDQ2534

The corporation council agreed to place the GPS instruments after it was the noticed that neither the corporation health Department nor the Zonal officers were able to keep track of the garbage clearing units be it dumber placers or the conservancy lorries.

Surprisingly, the Babu, the driver of the vehicle ,on learning that he was being monitored by a system, been driving the vehicle properly. He had not violated the speed, or wasted fuel or stopped unnecessarily, during the three days from November 22to25. According to the tripsheet, the speed violation was there only for 0.5 minutes. the vehicle had stopped at all the 26 designated places taking 66 hours and 17 minutes with five minutes duration between stops. the signal loss time was 40 minutes "All acceptable limits," says Corporation Health Officer Dr R Damodaran.

"The drivers can't tamper with the instrument. They have to follow the route and speed guidelines as per the software and any violation would be there on the trip sheet."

Even the testing of the software was a visual treat for the Corporation officials. It was like seeing a miniature lorry going around the route and carrying out the tasks as performed by the original vehicle.

Extremely satisfied with the performance of the GPS software installed by BANNARI INFOTECH LTD the corporation plans to install more such instruments.
